Stewball Publishing is an independent publisher of books, comics, graphic novels, and art. We publish works in print and digital media.
Stewball Publishing is named after the late David Ackley who hiked the Appalachian Trail twice under the trail name “Stewball.”
Hailing from Iowa, Stewball was the nicest person on the planet. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone. He stood six-foot-and-some-inches tall and was well-read and well-spoken. He was his high school’s class valedictorian and never missed a day of school from kindergarten through his senior year. He loved hitchhiking around the country and often picked up hitchhikers, finding camaraderie that he felt was sometimes missing in the “real world.” He and his former partner once picked up a couple in North Carolina and drove them to Florida because “that’s where they needed to go." He could eat an entire package of Double Stuf Oreos, Twizzlers, and Oatmeal Cream Pies in one sitting.
He never got tired of watching the original Star Wars trilogy and the Family Guy spoofs (Stewball reviled the prequels and the updated versions of the trilogy).
One late night during the 2008 presidential election in Asheville, North Carolina, where he volunteered for the Obama campaign, Stewball and a group of friends drove around reenacting their “Almost Famous” moment, singing along to Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” at maximum volume. His voice was the brightest.
In Stew We Do: our sincere hope is Stewball becomes a mythic, messianic cult figure revered by bright, magnanimous geeks from all backgrounds inspiring good works throughout the world. But in the meantime, just buying a book or two would be really nice. All proceeds from The Brief Wondrous Life of David “Stewball” Ackley will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
